Born as Ralf Winkler in Dresden, the painter, graphic artist, sculptor and jazz musician was self-taught as an artist. In the GDR he suffered from reprisals as a nonconformist artist who had already attracted international attention and moved to West Germany in 1980. In his figurative works, A.R. Penck developed a typical pictorial language consisting of archetypal ciphers, symbolic signs and human figures reduced to stick figures, with which he thematizes social, political conflicts and human fears.
