Born near Milan, the artist Antonio Calderara devoted himself autodidactically to painting in 1924 after abandoning his studies in engineering. At first he created representational works, mostly landscapes. It was not until 1959 that Calderara began to work non-representational and developed his typically sofltly coloured, formally reduced concrete style. He died in 1978 in Vacciago on the Lago d’Orta in Piedmont.
