After 24 years of planning, the Reichstag in Berlin was wrapped in 1995. 100,000 square meters of thick polypropylene fabric with an aluminized surface and 15,600 meters of blue polypropylene rope with a diameter of 3.2 cm were used to cover the Reichstag.
The American artist Christo was born on 13 June 1935 as Christo Vladimirov Javacheff in Gabrovo, Bulgaria. From 1953 to 1956 Christo studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia, and in 1957 he spent a semester at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. In 1958 he moved to Paris, where he met Jeanne-Claude. From the beginning Christo worked with wrapped objects and packages. In 1964 Christo and Jeanne-Claude moved to New York. Other important major projects by Christo and Jeanne-Claude are the 1976 “Running Fence”, California; 1983 the “Surrounded Islands”, Miami; 1985 “The Pont Neuf Wrapped”, Paris; 1991, “The Umbrellas, Japan-USA”, Japan; 1995 “Wrapped Reichstag, Berlin” and 2005 “The Gates”, in Central Park in New York or most recently the “Floating Piers” at Lago d’Iseo 2016, as well as the upcoming project “L’Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped” from September 19 to until October 4th 2020.
