Claes Oldenburg, born a diplomat’s son in Stockholm, grew up in Sweden and the USA. He studied at Yale University in New Haven until 1954 and then attended the Art Institute in Chicago. In 1956 he moved to New York City, where he still lives today. Oldenburg is regarded as one of the main representatives of American Pop Art. He is known for his replicas of everyday objects and food, which he alienates through monumental size or the use of fabrics, for example. In 1977 he created three giant pool balls for Skulptur.Projekte in Münster and a 12-meter pickaxe for documenta 7 in Kassel in 1982.
