Diébédo Francis Kéré was born in 1965 in Gando, a village in Burkina Faso. As the first child of his village, he received a school education and then became a carpenter. With a scholarship from the Carl Duisberg Society, he trained as a development aid supervisor in Germany and studied architecture at the Technical University in Berlin. The construction of a primary school in his home village, in which he combined traditional construction methods with his technical knowledge gained in Germany under special consideration of climatic conditions, represented his diploma project, which was awarded the Aga Khan Award for Architecture. Kéré works with his architectural office on other projects in his home country. He has received numerous awards and was elected a member of the prestigious American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2017.
