Georg Herold, born in Jena in 1947, trained as a blacksmith in the GDR and then studied with Sigmar Polke at the Hochschule für bildende Künste in Hamburg from 1977 to 1983. In the 1980s he became known together with Albert and Markus Oehlen, Werner Büttner and Martin Kippenberger as a representative of the Hamburg Neue Wilden. Herold creates sculptures and installations from simple materials such as wooden slats and bricks, but his oeuvre also includes video works. Since 1999 he has taught as a professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and lives and works in Cologne.
