Jan Heyse was born in 1882 in Zierikzee in the Dutch province of Zeeland and showed an early interest in drawing. In 1899 he began studying at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. An inheritance after his father’s death in 1913 brought him financial independence. He married, settled in Veere in Zeeland and devoted himself entirely to art. The motifs of his drawings and paintings – Madonnas in Zeeland costume, portraits of children, nudes and landscapes – are characterized by motionless calmness an quiet beauty. Jan Heyse died in 1954.
