Markus Lüpertz studied at the Werkkunstschule in Krefeld and briefly at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf, of which he was later rector from 1988 to 2009. Lüpertz’s works often show an expressive gesture and oscillate between figuration and abstraction. Markus Lüpertz is also considered one of the best-known contemporary German artists, not least because of his self-presentation as “Malerfürst” (painter-prince). He lives and works in Berlin, Karlsruhe, Düsseldorf and Florence.
