Biography

Born in Innsbruck, Nino Malfatti first studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and then from 1967 to 1972 at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe with Peter Herkenrath, Gerd van Dülmen and as a master student with Horst Antes. In 1974 he moved to Berlin, where he still lives and works alongside Tyrol. In his early works, the documenta 6 participant Malfatti structures and rhythmizes the picture surface by through serial juxtaposition of objects. Later he developed a landscape painting based on photographs he himself had taken in the Austrian high mountains. Nino Malfatti’s works can be found in renowned collections, including the Albertina in Vienna, the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart and the Berlinische Galerie.
