Victor Vasarely was born in 1906 in Pécs, Hungary. He studied in Budapest first at the Podolini-Volkmann Academy and then at the Mühely School of Graphic Arts, which took up the ideas of the Bauhaus. In 1930 he moved to Paris and initially worked as a commercial artist before devoting himself entirely to painting in 1944. Vasarely was one of the founders of Op-Art with his works, which were composed of geometric forms and mostly strong colours and achieved optical movement effects. From 1955 to 19672 he took part in the first four documenta exhibitions in Kassel and received numerous awards. He died in Paris in 1997.
